Kyaikto Golden Rock
There’s sometimes places to visit in the world that are awe inspiring and stay in your memories for ever as one of the wonders of the world. The Kyaikto Golden Rock in Burma is one of those. Second only to the Shwedagon Pagoda this is an essential stop on your visit to Yangon.

The Kyaikto Golden Rock is reachable as a day trip from Yangon. You just need to hire a car and driver; it’ll be a long day starting off with a departure from your hotel in Yangon around 5am and return around 7 or 8pm but worth it.
When you reach the base of the mountain you have to join others and hop onboard an open truck for a perilous journey up the mountain path, taking about 30 minutes to reach the point where the truck can go no more and you have to resort to walking the remainder, which can take another hour, there is a better option than the remaining walk and that is to hire a sedan chair, defiantly recommended as the hike up to the Kyaikto Golden Rock really is an effort even for the fittest of people.
From some vantage points it looks like the balancing act of this huge rock is at best precarious and it would just take a minor earth tremor to dislodge this wonderful sight. According to legend a single hair of the Buddha is all that holds the great golden gilded rock in position.
It’s a sacred sight and like the Shwedagon Pagoda the Kyaikto Golden Rock is somewhere all Buddhists in Burma want to visit at least once. You will see plenty of monks in their saffron robes and lots of pilgrims paying homage.
